Humanoid Robots: China vs US, Two Different Speeds

China: 400+ humanoid models and 40,000+ units in H1 2026, per its industry ministry. US: Tesla's Optimus ships late 2027. The race is scale.

THE SHORT ANSWER

China says it built more than 40,000 humanoid robots across 400+ models in the first half of 2026, according to its industry ministry. In the US, Tesla has begun early Optimus production, with deliveries in late 2027. The race may be won by scale, not by the best robot.

What happened?

Humanoid robots are moving at two speeds.

China: 400+ models and 40,000+ units built in the first half of 2026, according to its industry ministry. 110 of them just danced in sync for a Guinness world record.

US: Tesla began early Optimus production. Deliveries are planned for late 2027.

Why does it matter?

The Chinese figures come from its own industry ministry, and units built is not the same as robots doing useful work. Even so, volume drives down costs and builds supply chains. Whoever learns to make humanoids cheaply at scale may matter more than whoever makes the most impressive one.

What should you watch next?

→ Independent data on how many of these robots do useful work.

→ Unit costs as production volumes rise.

The race isn’t for the best robot. It’s for the first million.
